Our Aims

Increase activity levels within South Yorkshire

Young people in South Yorkshire face significant challenges when it comes to maintaining high levels of physical activity and overall well-being. Addressing these issues is crucial for their physical health, mental resilience, and future opportunities.

Declining Physical Activity Among Young People

Research shows that many young people in South Yorkshire do not meet the recommended daily levels of physical activity. Factors such as increased screen time, a decline in outdoor play, limited access to affordable sports facilities, and economic barriers have contributed to lower activity levels. This can lead to serious long-term health risks, including obesity, heart disease, and diabetes.

As seen above from Active Barnsley, they have the 22nd most deprived health and disability. On the other hand, they have the 304th living environments which is why we will target local public spaces to host sessions for those who cannot access travel.

Increase Mental and social health

Rising Mental Health Concerns

Mental health issues among young people are also on the rise, with increasing levels of stress, anxiety, and depression. Physical activity has been proven to boost mood, reduce stress, and improve self-esteem. However, without proper encouragement and accessible opportunities, many young people miss out on these benefits.

Cost of living crisis

The Impact of Socioeconomic Inequalities

South Yorkshire has areas of high deprivation, where young people may face additional barriers to leading an active and healthy lifestyle. With limited funding for extracurricular activities, and financial constraints it can prevent participation in sports and recreational activities. These inequalities contribute to poorer health outcomes and a reduced quality of life.

AJ2 Coaching will aim to use local public spaces to make sessions accessible, affordable, and no extra cost to participants for new equipment. We also aim to partnership with local schools to delivery High Quality PE for all ages and abilities.

Schools and the community

The Role of Schools and Communities

Schools, youth clubs, and community organizations play a vital role in promoting activity and well-being. More investment in school sports, after-school programs, and safe spaces for physical activity can encourage young people to be more active. Additionally, campaigns promoting mental health awareness and well-being strategies can help build resilience among young people.

A Call for Action

To improve the health and well-being of young people in South Yorkshire, there needs to be:

  • More accessible and affordable opportunities for physical activity.
  • Greater awareness of the mental health benefits of exercise.
  • Community-driven initiatives to ensure all young people, regardless of background, can participate in healthy activities.

AJ2's aims are to create safe and active environments for young people within South Yorkshire

Why Target Children And Young Adults?

Over 29% of children are inactive throughout England. Alarmingly, recent figures indicate that approximately 40% of children and young people in South Yorkshire are considered 'inactive', meaning they do not engage in regular physical exercise. This is 11% more than England's average.

This inactivity contributes to health concerns, as up to 26% of children in deprived areas across the region are overweight.

South Yorkshire has an estimated population of around 1.4 million, with approximately 20% being under 18. This means there are roughly 280,000 children and young people in the region meaning that the 40% of inactive children equates to approximately 112,000 children across South Yorkshire.

At AJ2 Coaching, we want all children and young adults to feel and understand the benefits of keeping an active and healthy lifestyle by creating fun activities available and accessible to all.
